DIANA region spreads over 255 km, a small area blessed with many wonders. The key advantage of this northern region of Madagascar is its diversity in terms of site, climate, landscapes and cultures.
In a relatively tight space you will be able to visit the red Tsingy and the Amber Mountain, and then to focus on the fabulous Tsingy of Ankarana. Diversity is also reflected in accomodation: you will stay in hotels with distinct concepts. You will enjoy the Antakarana’s warmth and hospitality with them.
Our team will welcome you at the airport at your flight time. Going to your hotel: the Grand Hôtel of Diego. Around noon, your driver will pick you up for lunch at the Allamanda. After that, setting off to make you discover the beauty of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) city, the capital of Northern Madagascar and a strategic port. Its inhabitants are the Antsiranese. Sheltered by Diego Suarez Bay, the second largest in the world (156 km) after Rio de Janeiro, the city will show you its colonial monuments, reminder of its glorious past. A tour of the market will enable you to see local products, typical of the region. Also visit the bay and its “Sugar Loaf”; go to the Navy Hall, Jacob Mosque, Joffre site where to observe Cap Diego, the ancient city of Antsiranana and the busy harbor. How about watching the sun setting over the bay of Diego? Overnight in half board at the Grand Hotel.
A pick-up at your hotel to immerse yourself in the heart of a “Biological Treasure.” After 45 minutes drive you will reach the Amber Mountain National Park. It is a volcanic and mountainous region, a wildlife oasis in northern Madagascar. Going for a 3 hours hike to discover the sacred waterfalls, chameleons, endemic birds as well as the fabulous lemurs. Our guides will share you their knowledge of nature, its assets and its tales. Lunch at Henriette’s before proceeding for the “Red Tsingy”. Located 65 km from Antsiranana, not far from the Analamerana reserve, the Red Tsingy are a particular geological formation consisting of natural laterite sculptures designed by rain and wind. Their shape can be compared to the tsingy made of sharp and cutting stones, but their lateritic nature makes them unique and enchanting. Overnight stay with half-board at Relais de l’Ankarana.
After a hearty breakfast, time to visit the eastern part of Ankarana Park. These incredible karst formations also exist here in the North. A great massif of impenetrable sharp limestone peaks extends on several kilometers. Its canyons are home to multiple species. Follow the trails of the “Benavony” circuit to find the suspension bridge. You will feel like walking over those eminent Tsingy. Lunch at Aurélien’s. Night half board at Iharana Bush Camp.
Iharana Bush Camp is a fun accommodation set up opposite a lake, behind which imposingly stands a Tsingy massif. A 20-minutes calm lake crossing and you are at the foot of the Tsingy. The Tsingy Tsingy tour will lead you to a first viewpoint through small trails. Along your walk, observe the intriguing plants throughout: orchids, pachypodiums … The coronatus lemurs are also there. A striking sight awaits you at the lookout: 360° view on the Tsingy, characteristic vegetation and even the Mitsio archipelago when sky is clear. Next, the row of ridges will lead you to the cave called the Chameleon’s. Stones, earth and roots form an unforeseen scenery. The visit lasts half an hour. You then leave the Tsingy and head back to Iharana Bush Camp to have lunch there. In the afternoon, take a 3 hours bike ride, this time around the Tsingy massif. Discover village life and the local diversity of plant and animal species of the area. Night half board at Iharana Bush Camp.
After breakfast, morning departure to visit the Millot Plantation. Experience the preparation of Madagascar’s cocoa: sorting, collecting, fermentation and drying. Depending on the season, you can see also the area of peppers preparation or the plot of spices (combava, allspices). Then go in the Ylang Ylang fields where you may participate in harvesting the flowers. Through Route Perfume towards the farm to see the distillery, the extraction unit, the boilers and the compost preparation area. Cross Cocoa fields and plots of Vetiver, Ravintsara and Pink Pepper. Depending on the season, visit the coffee and vanilla processing plant. Back to the main farmhouse through the city of Ambanja. Lunch at the Planter’s home.
